Gather the Information Before you begin

The flow rate determines the size of your system.

How many sprinklers your system can run at one time depends on how much water your home can supply. In this section, you’ll make a few simple measurements to determine the “flow rate”.

Time how long it takes to fill a bucket of known volume. Tap should be the closest to the meter or water source. Tap or valve should be fully open before placing the bucket under the tap with no other taps or valves open.

EG. 18 seconds to fill 9 litre bucket

9 divided by 18 = 0.5 litres per second.
0.5 x 60 seconds = 30 litres per minute.

Flow Rate = 30 litres per minute.

Plan the Layout

Deliver water right where it’s needed

The first step in laying out your system is to decide which areas you want to water.

Plot the locations of areas to water

Using the grid, please download the home irrigation planner (or house plan copy), plot the outlines of your home and garden areas. Include walkways, driveways, patios, swimming pools etc. Use a tape measure for accuracy, and make sure all areas match the scale of the grid and label each area according to type of foliage (e.g. Lawn, shrub, flowerbed etc.).

Mark position of mains water meter and tap positions. Also position of bore on block or other water sources, dams or rivers or tanks.

Scale of grid is 1 square = 1 metre.
